(Parker Memorial Church, constructed between 1888-1891, is one of many historic sites in Anniston)
The city of Anniston lies at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and is the main industrial and cultural center of Calhoun County. Residents and visitors alike enjoy this beautiful setting that is bordered on the east by the Talladega National Forest and on the west by the Coosa River.
So rich is the history of this town that it would take more than a few days to tour the remnants of Anniston's early days. There are several very impressive houses of worship that date back to the late 1800's, including Grace Episcopal and Parker Memorial Churches, in addition to Anniston's only Jewish synagogue, Temple Beth-El. Other sites of interest are Historic Zinn Park and the Kilby House, the latter of which was built in 1914 and served as a social center of the town for many years. However, for those people who would rather have a quick sampling of many things, the Anniston Museum of Natural History and the Berman Museum of World History will save a lot of walking time. You can use that saved up energy in one of the area's many parks and hiking trails.
The Spirit of Anniston Main Street Program is a current initiative begun by the city to not only preserve the unique charm of Anniston's historical districts, but also to promote Anniston as an exciting place to live. Various local businesses have sprung up in recent years as increasing numbers of tourists are exploring Anniston's special character.
Anniston is serviced by US 431 and Highway 21, and is located just off of I-20. Nearby cities include Birmingham, about 60 miles to the west, and Gadsden, which is 20 miles to the north.
