(Daphne is a popular resort area situated along the shores of Mobile Bay)
The earliest recorded settlers to explore this area were the Spanish, who originally arrived in the mid-1500's. Prior to this time there is ample evidence showing that a variety of Native American tribes called the present-day site of Daphne home for hundreds of years. Daphne spent part of its early history as a resort area and was home to Italian immigrants who brought agricultural expertise with them. Today, many of the original families remain an important vestige of the area's heritage. For example, the "Festa Italiana" is a festival honoring the array of fine homemade pastas, sauces, and delightful foods and crafts prepared from Italian family traditions. This festival, held in conjunction with the Eastern Shore Chamber's Arts & Crafts Festival, attracts visitors from around the state.
Daphne is centered in one of the region's fastest growing areas. In fact, Daphne itself is among the nation's fastest growing cities, owing to its desirable location on the shoreline of Mobile Bay, and its easy access to the city of Mobile, AL. Tourism is a major contributor to Daphne's economy, and it is not difficult to find a quaint bed and breakfast or a site of interest in town.
Daphne is just off of I-10 and is readily accessible to towns in both Alabama and Florida.
