Population: 29,917 Chugiak-Eagle River is a community under the municipal government of Anchorage. The 2000 census placed placed the community at 29,917. The community has experienced very rapid growth over the past twenty years with the population almost doubling between 1980 and 1990 from 12,858 to 25,324. The population grew an additional 18% between 1990 and 2000.

Because of the large number of families with children, the 1990 average household size was 3.08 in Chugiak-Eagle River -- larger than the municipal average of 2.66. Chugiak-Eagle River’s population has a median age of 30.4 years, slightly higher than the municipal average of 29.1. (Chugiak-Eagle River Comprehensive Plan, 1993).

The Alaska Department of Labor reports that employment composition in 1990 consisted of trade at 31 percent; services at 22 percent; government at 22 percent; transportation/communication/utilities at 13%; construction at 6 percent and other at 6 percent. Most businesses are local rather than regional serving.
