(Beautiful Alaskan Scenery
(Courtesty of Fort Wainwright MWR))
Located just 160 miles from the Arctic Circle, Fort Wainwright is the home of "America's Arctic Warriors". For officers and soldiers of the U.S. Army stationed here, it is (as one put it) "smack dab in the middle of a big gnarly hunk of paradise." Luxurious barracks, beautiful scenery and the nearby amenities of Fairbanks make this area quite peaceful, despite being a military post.
The Fort Wainwright Education Center, in addition to various child development programs and services, provides a favorable environment for solders and officers with young children. The Post Library further enhances the educational experience with over 21,000 books, computers with Internet connections, and a mulit-purpose room for classes or groups.
Recreational opportunities abound at Fort Wainwright. Golfing, skiing and bowling are among the few sporting events, while an arts and crafts center, community club and auto skills center allow for leisure and learning at the same time.
Fort Wainwright is located in Alaska's Interior region adjacent to Fairbanks. The major unit at Fort
Wainwright today is the 1st Brigade, 6th Infantry Division (Light). Fort Wainwright is also home to the 172d Infantry Brigade (separate), 4/11 Field Artillery Regiment, 203rd Personnel Services Battalion, Medical Activity-Alaska and Dental Activity-Alaska. At Fort Wainwright, arctic soldiers work and train in temperatures ranging from 80 degrees F in the summer to minus 50 degrees F in the winter.
