Originally founded as a mining camp, this area became one of the richest mineral sites in the world. Population subsequently swelled to around 20,000, making this community the largest between St. Louis and San Francisco. However, a fire in the early 1900's ravaged much of the downtown district. During the same period the mines became less productive and population shrank. Since large-scale mining became unprofitable in the mid-1970's, Bisbee has evolved into a comfortable community with old west history and copper mining lore.
Bisbee sits atop the Mule Mountains in extreme southern Arizona. The town's mining history is maintained in the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum and Queen Mine Tours and its current charm is fueled by the variety of people and activities in this taste of the Old West.
