Opened as an Army post on December 25, 1817, to keep peace between warring Indian tribes and incorporated as a town on December 24, 1842. The site was chosen because of its commanding position, and because of the natural beauty of the spot. The post was named Camp Smith, and later Fort Smith, in honor of General Thomas A Smith, the commander of the western frontier forces. General Zachary Taylor, of Mexican War fame and later the 12th President of the United States, was stationed at the fort for a time. The chimney of his home still stands at the east end of Garrison Avenue. It used to be the last fort before you entered the Indian Territory. The fort was a vital part of our nation's westward expansion.

Schools: The schools have always been a leader among Arkansas schools. Students and educators from the area regularly receive state and national recognition. All six secondary schools, plus Cook, Euper Lane, Orr and Woods Elementary Schools have earned recognition as Arkansas Schools of Excellence. The Northside and Southside High Schools have received recognition as National Blue Ribbon Schools. Students have a 77.0% completion rate. With more than 12,700 students, the district is the third largest on the state. The public School District follows Arkansas law regarding class size. Kindergarten classes may not exceed 20 students; Grades 1-3 may not exceed 25 students; Grades 4-6, not more than 28 students. Secondary classes may include up to 30 students. The average student - to - teacher ratio is 14.4:1. All schools are accredited by the North Central Association (NCA). Support and special services include remedial and special education services, gifted and talented programs, elementary and secondary counselors, career education programs and choral, band and orchestra programs.

Housing Costs: The cost of living consistently ranks among the lowest five in the nation. According to cost of living reports, the overall cost of living is 87.9% of the national average.
