Van Buren is located in Crawford County
Population: 14,979 Van Buren is nestled in the wooded foothills of the Boston Mountains on the north banks of the Arkansas River. The incredible scenic panorama of the Natural State offers an ideal setting for outdoor recreational activities ranging from golf and hiking to water sports. The area has two beautiful parks designed for family enjoyment. On average, there is 200 sunny days a year with 40.9 inches of annual precipitation. The mean daily maximum temperature is 73°, the minimum temperature is 50°. There are only 69 days a year with a minimum temperature of 32°.
Van Buren is located at 35 degrees 26 minutes North and longitude 94 degrees 21 minutes West in the Arkansas River Valley near the Western border of the state. Elevation in the city ranges from 420 feet at the Courthouse to 760 feet on Mt. Vista in the northwestern part of the city.
One of the oldest cities in Arkansas is Van Buren. In 1818 Thomas Phillips bought land rights to the site, and for a time the community was known as Phillips Landing. Shortly thereafter, with the assigning of a post office and the sale of several lots, a court house was built for Crawford County. During this period a number of shops, stores, taverns and a branch of the Arkansas State Bank were opened and Phillips Landing became Van Buren. The town was named for Martin Van Buren, a friend of Thomas Phillips, the first settler.

Located on Arkansas' Antique Trail, this exceptional collection of shops and boutiques has become a shopping Mecca for hard-to-find collectibles, one-of-a-kind gifts, original art, local Ozark crafts, home decorations and extraordinary antiques at unbelievably low prices. Historic buildings include: Anheuser-Bush Brewing Company; Crawford County Bank Building; Crawford County Courthouse; Edmondson and Britt Grocers; Ingeberg Books and Stationery; King Opera House; Masonic Hall; Merrill Brothers Meat Market; The Old Frisco Depot; and Pernot Queenswear Store. The turn-of-the-century architecture of Van Buren's Main Street has antiques, art galleries, Victorian accessories. The street appeared in films and the TV mini-series "The Blue and the Gray".
