Bonita, California is located ten miles southeast of San Diego and three miles east of Chula Vista. It was a rural residential district many years ago named originally by Henry E. Cooper in 1884, from his Rancho Bonita. It was purchased in 1890 by the Sweetwater Fruit Company, which developed the area. Bonita is an unincorporated area bordered by state route 54 on the north, Madre Grande Mountain in the east (state road 125), Telegraph Canyon on the south, and Interstate 805 on the west. Bonita’s humble beginnings are
evident when watching the many horses and riders along the miles of riding and hiking trails crisscrossing the valley. The region was noted for truck gardens, alfalfa growing, citrus orchards, celery farms, dairy and poultry products, hog ranches and horse corrals.
The Allen family originally settled this place, one of which still lived in Bonita in 1936. Known to most San Diegans, the Glen Abbey Memorial Park, one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the state, is situated here. The Bonita Riding Academy was also very widely known.
There are three major educational facilities for children in Bonita: Allen-Ann Daly Center with 25 teachers and 430 students specializing in
Special Education; Sunnyside Elementary School with 32 teachers and 566 students, grade spanning from K thru 6 and Valley Vista Elementary School with 37 teachers and 681 students, grades spanning from K thru 6. Bonita Vista High School is very well known high school in this area. Southwestern College, a local community college is right in neighboring Chula Vista.
A busy four-lane street now replaces the slow two-lane country road today. Bonita is proud of its churches, shopping centers and professional buildings. It still has two accredited 18-hole golf courses lining the river valley.
In 1971, Emily Ritter organized a group of 30 local business and professional people and founded the Bonita Business & Professional Association. From early morning meetings held at the old Brookside Winery, the Bonitafest was born. The Bonitafest is an annual event, which lines Bonita Road with craft, game, and food booths, and is highlighted by a two-hour parade with marching bands and hometown entries. An old-fashioned family deep pit barbecue at the Optimist Center on Sweetwater Road is the highlight of the day.
Bonita is adorned by beautiful people and every year a Miss Bonita holds the beauty title. Family and friends, with songs and dances from a culturally diverse group of people, celebrate the event. Noted for its open spaces, rolling hills, parks, and friendly people and near perfect weather; Bonita is just the perfect place to raise your family or business. Single-family residences range in price from $355,000 to $1,550,000 and condominiums/townhomes range $285,000 to $307,000.
