end of a peninsula, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Bay of San Diego on the other. Due to a certain amount of seclusion Coronado enjoys, it has made it as one of the most desirable residential cities on the Pacific coast. Although removed from the noise and confusion of congested areas and free from the annoyances of traffic, Coronado has adequate facilities required of a metropolitan city. There is even a ferry that would take you to and from Coronado Island. With its mild climate, making outdoor activities possible almost every day in the year, Coronado has become known as
America’s playground. Here you can enjoy yachting, swimming, fishing and all aquatic pasttimes practically all year round. You can indulge in golf, horseback riding and tennis. Being surrounded by water, Coronado’s temperature is somewhat warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer than San Diego.
Although San Diego had made rapid progress, it was not until the early eighties that the possibilities of development of Coronado were recognized. In 1886, E.S. Babcock and H.L. Storey conceived the idea of a resort hotel on the beach. They then began the construction of Hotel del
Coronado. With its grand opening on February 1, 1888, Coronado became famous all over the world and travelers made it a “port of call” ever since. United States presidents and European royalties graced the distinguished guests lists.
The development of the City of Coronado has progressed resulting in a community of rare charm. The wide paved streets, bordered with trees picked for their adaptability and attractiveness, add to the homelike atmosphere of the many fine homes of the residents. Among Coronado’s permanent residents are prominent persons in the affairs of the world attracted by the city’s advantages. They have made their homes here upon retirement from active business. The city of Coronado is full of history and boasts of a few fables as well. Stories about ghosts roaming the half of many of the hotels on Coronado, including stories of Kate Morgan—the Hotel del Coronado’s famous ghostly inhabitant were talked about locally.
The Pacific Ocean, Glorietta Bay and San Diego Bay border the picturesque seaside city linked to the Southern California coastline and the city of San Diego by the graceful and stately
San Diego – Coronado Bridge, and to the south by a narrow strip of land known as the Silver Strand. Coronado is most deserving of its royal “nickname” the Crown City.
Coronado’s schools are Sacred Heart Parish School, Coronado Unified School District, Coronado High School, Coronado Middle School, Coronado Village Elementary School and Silver Strand Elementary School. Single-family residences range from $525,000 to $16,200,000. Condominiums and townhomes however range from $435,000 to $3,450,000.
