Population: 94,869 El Cajon is nestled in a valley surrounded by hills, hence its name which means "The Box". It borders San Diego to the East, lies 17 miles from the Pacific Ocean and has a warm, dry climate. Education is valued in El Cajon, with two community colleges and a private college located in the city. The El Cajon Library is in a beautiful, spacious facility that opened in 1991 thanks to a combination of funding from a federal grant, the El Cajon Redevelopment Agency and private donations raised by the Friends of the El Cajon Library. The El Cajon Library also has the lar gest circulation in the San Diego County System, with over 400,000 items checked out annually. A unique feature of El Cajon is the Mother Goose Parade held annually on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It began in the 1940's and continues to delight chil dren of all ages. El Cajon is a compassionate community containing many facilities for the physically and mentally disabled. The El Cajon Chamber of Commerce is one of the more than 100 civic and business organizations in the city which also includes th e El Cajon Historical Society and the Friends of the El Cajon Libray. The strong level of volunteerism and civic mindedness of the citizens reflects El Cajon as an active vibrant community.
