Art. History. Architecture. The Pacific, rivers and Redwoods. Street Fairs and Music Festivals....There's always something to see and do in or around Eureka. Whether a hike through the woods of Sequoia Park or quiet contemplation of the craftsmanship of last century's artisans, you'll find the opportunity here-and of course, you'll find a wealth of information to help you make the most of your explorations.
The Victorians
No other city in the United States has as many "Victorian" structures as Eureka. Fine examples of the best craftsmanship of the last century exist throughout the city. Some exquisitely restored, some now comfortable Bed and Breakfast Inns, each is unique and represents the skills of the builder and the varied tastes of owners through the years present day.
The Victorian look began in the 1800's with the belief that the more embellishment one could put on a house or building, the more beautiful it became. Abounding in materials, skilled craftsmen, and new-found prosperity, Eureka saw a boom in construction of these ornate structures at the end of the last century.
In the beginning of the era, European styles were copied faithfully with turrets and towers, gables and beautiful hand carvings.
Numerous examples of the period's architecture are extant in Eureka today; many have been restored to their full original beauty.
Eureka now boasts the largest number of Victorian homes per capita of any city in the United States, as well as the Carson Mansion, probably the most-photographed example of Victorian architecture in the world.
