Granite Bay Relocation Guide

Granite Bay is located in Placer County

Population: 19,388

Granite Bay roots lead back to the early 1850's, when gold miners first settled the banks of the American River. According to retired Park Ranger Dave McGrath, there were 37 gold mining settlements along both sides of the American River. In its earliest beginnings, Granite Bay was known as "Granite Bar", a small mining camp just below Horseshoe Bar. Granite Bar, later known as Granite Bay, was named for the granite rock quarried from its banks and used as "rip-rap" in the wing dams of Folsom Dam.

When the interest in mining waned, the rolling terrain southeast of Granite Bar evolved into farming and ranching territory and continued into the 20th Century. Presently, Granite Bay bridges the gap between rural and luxurious. Large lots with city amenities characterize the area, as does a vocal citizenry anxious to keep the unincorporated community picturesque, safe, and upscale.

Shaded by a heavy canopy of oak trees, artistic natural jumbles of granite boulders decorate the lots and roadsides of Granite Bay. Traffic slows for horses crossing the road on their way to or from the riding trails in the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. A few homes have stupendous views of the lake bed; others have easy access to the state park and many trails that lead northward to the Folsom area.

The citizenry has formed a Municipal Advisory Committee which takes an active role in helping the county shape its future. The council, which passes ideas on to the Placer County Board of Supervisors, is one of the most respected in the county. It scrutinizes staffing at the sheriff's department, traffic problems, education and economic development as well as planning proposals.

Its proximity to a variety of recreational opportunities and employment centers has made Granite Bay one of the area's most desirable addresses in Placer County.
