Lemon Grove was once a part of the original Allison Springs Ranch of Robert Allison. It is situated eight miles east of San Diego on Imperial Avenue, at an elevation of 460 feet. It was once largely a region of orange and lemon groves, dividing line of the coastal and foothill valley zones. This town became Lemon Grove because of the numerous lemon orchards of the valleys and mesas surrounding the little settlement.

Dating back to 1869, Frank Allison, son of the pioneer sheep ranger, Robert Allison, drove a herd of 3,500 sheep from San Francisco to his father’s ranch, a 4,200 acre tract that then included Lemon Grove and La Mesa.

Recalling the community’s agricultural regions, Lemon Grove is known for the “Best Climate on Earth.” Nestled in the middle of a twenty-billion dollar a year trade area, residing in Lemon Grove is not simply living in a town, but it means being a part of a community that values the simpler way of life and still upholding values of the American tradition.

Today, the City of Lemon Grove is filled with hundreds of stores, large-scale regional retailers down to small and personalized craftsman to meet virtually all shopping needs of residents and the surrounding region. The more popular ones include Lemon Grove Gateway, Gateway Plaza, 94 Country Plaza, Lemon Grove Plaza, Lemon Grove Square, El Dorado Properties, La Mancha Plaza, Lemon Grove Center, Golden Professional Center, Washington Square, Broadway Plaza, Palm Center and Lemon Grove Commercial Center.

Schools include Lemon Grove District Office and Grossmont High School District Office. Middle Schools include Lemon Grove Middle School and Palm Middle School. High Schools are Helix High School, Mt. Miguel High School, and Monte Vista High School. There is Mt. Miguel Adult School for adults. Community colleges include Grossmont College and Cuyamaca Community College. Universities include University of California San Diego (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU).

Lemon Grove is only several minutes away from downtown San Diego, Because of its public transportation system, residents of this city are very mobile. The city of Lemon Grove has the Metropolitan Transit System (bus), Lemon Grove Shuttle, AMTRAK (train) and the San Diego Trolley.
