Martinez is located in Contra Costa County

Population: 35,135 Martinez is located at the foot of lush green rolling hills and olive groves on the banks of the Carquinez Straits, which carries water from the Sacramento River, the San Joaquin River and the delta into San Francisco Bay. It is about 35 miles northeast of San Francisco.

Martinez is the county seat of Contra Costa County - the center for government activity, from legislation to criminal justice. But along with the criminal courts there are also bocce ball courts and tennis courts, where small town neighbors meet to relax with their families.

Martinez is a small city of 35,135, where parents raise their children, antique stores fill the downtown, Amtrak stops 4 times a day and Joltin Joe DiMaggio is a local boy who made good.

From a trading post in 1849 to incorporation in 1876, Martinez was a Gold Rush and shipping boomtown, early settlers of the county bought, sold, and shipped their goods here. One of them also created the popular drink known as the "Martini". Our local newspaper began operation in 1858.

Martinez was a major shipping port, based primarily on the lucrative grain trade between California's central valley and international ports-of-call. John Muir, noted naturalist, writer, crusader for the creation and reservation of national parks and founder of the Sierra Club, built a home here, now a national historic site that draws visitors and nature lovers from all over the world. Many other vintage homes are scattered throughout the town, in every style of Victorian and turn of the century motif.
