National City is located in San Diego County

Population: 54,249 With a population of over 50,000 people, National City is a very prosperous little city. It is the second oldest city in San Diego County and has the distinction of being the southwestern most incorporated city of the United States. Incorporated in September l7, 1887, National City was originally the 25,000-acre El Rancho de la Nacion, purchased in 1868 by Frank Kimball and his brothers Warren and Levi. They built roads, constructed the City’s first wharf and brought the railroad to the City.

Four major buildings in the City are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. They are Granger Music Hall, Brick Row on Heritage Square, St. Matthews Episcopal Church and Santa Fe Rail Depot. As a culturally diverse city, National City is proud to be the center of a mixture of different peoples including the Hispanics and Filipinos alike. It is the proud home of Seafood City and Tatak Pilipino. It is 9.2 square miles located in San Diego County bordered by the City of San Diego on the north and east, Chula Vista on the south, San Diego Bay on the west. It is ten miles north of Baja California, Mexico, and the International Border.

National City has a newly-elected Mayor, Nick Inzunza, who was elected in November 2002. Inzunza is the first Latino elected into this position since 1849 and the youngest person ever to serve as Mayor of National City. Already, this young Mayor is hard at work. His ambitious plans include building a $23-million library, an $8-million fire station, a new Cesar Chavez Center, and a University Annex, in conjunction with Southwestern College and San Diego State University, to serve 15,000 students.

His brother, Ralph Jr., stated in an interview for a local Latino magazine that National City’s young Mayor plans to take the bull by the horns and under his term, National City will blossom. According to his brother, he is working to bring business to National City, attracting Wal-Mart, working with Costco and Starbucks Coffee officials to bring those stores locally. He also conceived building a Filipino Village, which he has expressed in many of his personal appearances to the Filipino community.

Schools in this area include Gospel Light Christian Schools, Grace Christian School – Fellowship, San Diego Academy, Southport Christian Academy, National Elementary School District, Central Elementary School, El Toyon Elementary School, IRA Harbison Elementary School, John Otis Elementary School, Kimball Elementary School, Las Palmas Elementary school, Lincoln Acres Elementary School, Granger Junior High School, National City Adult School, National City Middle School, Sweetwater high School and Sweetwater Union High School.
