Newark, incorporated in 1955, is located 35 miles south of San Francisco, 30 miles south of Oakland, 20 miles north of San Jose, and 395 miles north of Los Angeles. It sits on the southeast edge of the San Francisco Bay.

Community Facilities
The City has an urgent care facility for medical needs provided by Washington Hospital, the public hospital district serving Newark, Fremont and Union City. The walk-in clinic is located in the Raley's Shopping Center. There is also a Newark Health Center located across from City Hall that is operated by the County of Alameda. Newark Unified School District has 8 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 1 high school. There is also an Adult School as well as an Ohlone College campus, which houses the Center for Career Transition whose purpose is to provide the public with full job search and career assistance.
There are 17 houses of worship located in Newark. There is one paper, The Argus, published by Media News Group, Inc. that covers the Tri-City area; cable television provided by AT&T; an Alameda County Library; and 8 banks. The City's Community Center provides reasonable licensed child care for 3 - 5 year old children.
Newark maintains 10 parks throughout its community. In addition, Newark is adjacent to the 21,000 acre San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors can also explore East Bay Regional Park District's Mission Peak Regional Preserve rising 1,500 feet out of the Bay plain, the 900-acre Coyote Hills Regional Park, and the 200-acre Ardenwood Historic Farm -- all just minutes from the City. There is also a 12 mile Alameda Creek Regional Trail connecting the Bay shoreline with Niles Canyon.
Newark is also home to the 30-acre George M. Silliman Recreation Complex. This complex contains soccer and softball/baseball fields. A new 37,500-sq.ft. Community Activity Center has been developed with an new aquatic facility addition proposed.
Employment
Newark has a diversified industrial- and retail-based economy. There are 45 manufacturing plants in the community area. Leading manufacturers include computer network servers, semi-conductors, salt processing, glass products, food processing, and electronic components. Largest employment centers are BT Office Products, Cargill Salt, Hewlett-Packard, Inland Container Corporation, Nordstrom, Ross Stores, Solectron Corporation, and Sun Microsystems, WorldPac.
