To the west Oakland has 19 miles of coastline along San Francisco Bay. To the east are the Oakland Hills, from which are found majestic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and blue Pacific Ocean beyond, or inland golden ridges leading to lofty Mt. Diablo.
The Office of Parks and Recreation (OPR) offers a wide range of recreation, cultural, arts, education and employment programs and activities for all ages and segments of the City of Oakland. OPR is responsible for more than 2,500 acres of open space, more than 100 parks and public grounds and 25 recreation and community centers. OPR partners with more than 50 non-profit organizations and the Oakland Unified School District to provide programs such as sailing, basketball, swimming, summer camps, soccer, tennis and dance at six gymnasiums, more than 50 athletic fields, 100 basketball courts and 45 tennis courts. OPR is also responsible for management and oversight of City Stables, Oakland Zoo, Dunsmuir House and Gardens, and Children’s Fairyland.
Parents want to see their children succeed. The district extends its hand in partnership towards realizing the full potential of each child.
