Santa Monica Relocation Guide

Santa Monica is located in Los Angeles County

Population: 86,905
"Nestled on L.A.’s Fashionable Westside"

Santa Monica enjoys the overflow of fame and glamour from nearby Los Angeles. However, the city's early days were very humble. Settled in the 1600's by Spanish settlers, the site on which Santa Monica now sits was the result of several Spanish/Mexican land grants. However, the area was soon seen as a desirable place by wealthy Easterners who wanted an oceanside resort in which to "play". Before long, industry came to the town and the population in the area increased. The Douglas Aircraft Company was founded in 1920 and was later responsible for building the aircraft that helped win World War II. The 1920's also saw an influx of a few of Hollywood's most famous people, many of whom built mansions in Santa Monica. The city provided a bit of privacy for these stars, which included Will Rogers, Greta Garbo, and Norma Talmadge. A 345-acre horse ranch built by Will Rogers became an historical site in 1955 when the city inherited the land. Several historical museums highlight the most noteworthy events of Santa Monica's evolution as a fun and exciting town. The Santa Monica Historical Society Museum of History and Culture features an exhibition gallery, vintage clothing and a photography archive. The Museum of Television and Radio and the Hollywood Wax Museum are treasures that both children and parents will enjoy.

Today, Santa Monica is a city in motion, epitomizing the finest in Southern California living. A vibrant downtown area lined with unique shops and elegant dining is matched only by the city's convenient location on the Pacific coastline. There are many special attractions in Santa Monica that provide both recreation and simple fun. The International Chess Park, located at Ocean Front Walk, hosts hundreds of chess matches each day. Muscle Beach was once the workout site for bodybuilders such as Jack LaLanne and Vic and Armand Tanny. The old equipment is still around, though efforts are underway to restore the area to its 1950's glory. Adults may also appreciate the history of Santa Monica Boulevard, better known as "Route 66". The famed route ends its winding, national run at Ocean Avenue.

Visitors will want to experience the 3.5-mile stretch of sand known as Santa Monica Beach. This beach has been seen in countless movies and TV shows. Numerous activities are available here, including surfing, swimming, fishing, volleyball, and roller-blading. It is a popular "people watching" area since the various cultures that make up Santa Monica are represented here one way or another.

Santa Monica is located about 10 minutes west of Los Angeles and a few miles from Beverly Hills. Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, runs through Santa Monica, providing easy access to surrounding towns and plenty of gorgeous ocean views.
