(The Highlands Ranch Mansion)
Though Highlands Ranch is a planned community, and a very carefully planned one at that, there is an interesting history associated with the land in which it sits. Actually part of the Louisiana Purchase from Napolean, famous names have passed more than once through Highlands Ranch territory. Kit Carson, Lewis Cleveland (President Grover Cleveland's cousin), John Springer (a descendant of the Russian Czar), and cheese makers Johanne Welte and Plazidus Gassner. Springer actually ended up owning 23,000 acres of the property and built the Highlands Ranch Mansion in 1904. The property changed hands several times and was a cattle ranch at one point. Finally, Shea Homes acquired the property in 1997 and is still the developer today.
Located in Douglas County, the community is supported by the Douglas County School District, offering residents a formidable education for all ages, and the Douglas County Public Library with a new branch right in the town center. Snow removal and road maintenance is also provided by the county government. Indoor recreation, including programs at the two community recreation centers, indoor and outdoor pool facilities and residential architectural review are managed by a homeowner's association. Two golf courses are located in Highlands Ranch. RTD, the Regional Transportation District, serves Highlands Ranch with bus service and a recently-launched connector bus service, known as the RanchRider. With a host of state parks, hiking areas, shopping, awesome restaurants and a multitude of other diverse activities for which Colorado is famous, including some of the world's best skiing and snowboarding a little more than an hour's drive in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, Highlands Ranch residents have it all!
