Watertown is located in Litchfield County

Population: 20,456 Pleasently nestled in the foothills of Litchfield County, Watertown is a town with an abundance of lifestyle opportunities, diverse industry and family outdoor pleasure.

Incorporated in 1780, industry played an important role in the early development and growth of Watertown, and continues to support the community today. Plastics, silks, and synthetic fabrics, mattresses, cutting tools and brass goods are just a sample of the many quality products manufactured in town, and which provide valuable employment to residents. A variety of small shops, the 10 Acre Mall and Watertown Shopping Plaza serve the retail needs of citizens.

Even with a long industrial history, Watertown has managed to preserve much of the New England charm and unspoiled terrain of its colonial days. A fact greatly appreciated by residents. The town center is remarkably intact and features a lovely Town Green surrounded by historic architecture from many periods. Across from the Green, the picturesque campus of the Taft School, a prestigious college preparatory school, adds to the grace and beauty of the area. This district is also the site of the birthplace of the poet John Trumbull. Recreational activities include camping and hiking at Mattatuck State Forest and Black Rock State Forest; watersports and picnicking at Echo Lake and Sylvan Lake; a strong youth athletic program, tennis, a summer day camp, swimming, an 18-hole public golf course and a private golf and country club. An active senior center provides a variety of programs and events for Watertown's older residents, including a convenient minibus service.

In addition to manufacturing, education has also played an integral part in life in Watertown. The original public school system of nine one-room school houses is represented today by the modern facilities of five elementary schools, a junior high school and a senior high school. A traditional curriculum is complemented by special education and numerous adult evening courses. Private instruction is provided by the Taft School and two parochial schools.
