(The Taurus rocket is used to launch satellites into space)
The Cape Canaveral area has become synonymous with rockets and space shuttles. This history dates back to military launches in the 1950's. Chosen as a launch site due to its close proximity to the ocean (for over-the-water launches), favorable climate conditions year round, and location in a sparsely populated area, Cape Canaveral has watched its town prosper along with the space program. Residents in Titusville and other local towns are backyard spectators to both rocket and space shuttle launches.
The first few decades of Cape Canaveral's history gave no inkling as to the importance it would have in the exploration of our universe. When the site was originally settled in the 1920's it was to be nothing more than a resort area for a group of retired Orlando journalists. However, during the Great Depression much of this land was lost by the men who purchased it. However, one of the original investors sold his home in order to repurchase part of the land. His vision involved connecting Orlando directly with the beaches around Cape Canaveral and creating a beautiful oceanside town. Though this visionary died before his dream was realized, his son continued with his father's vision by setting aside land for future public interests. By 1958 the beach area had grown in population as the Space Program flourished. There was much discussion about the possibility of annexing Cape Canaveral to nearby Cocoa Beach. However, homeowners and businesses in the Cape Canaveral area were becoming concerned about their investment in the community and decided the time was right to pursue incorporation as a town of their own.
The town of Cape Canaveral is actually located on the Cape of the same name. It maintains a direct connection to Orlando via the Bee Line Expressway. Nearby towns include Titusville and Cocoa Beach.
