(Rockledge City Hall)
Rockledge is the oldest winter resort on the east coast of Florida. Since its incorporation in 1887, the town has been host to many northerners seeking its warm winters. Rockledge is nestled along the Indian River Lagoon where residents and visitors enjoy the sprawling fauna. It is not uncommon to see osprey and bald eagles flying overhead and manatees playing in the lagoon waters.
Primarily a resort town in its early days, Rockledge experienced an economic boom when the nation's Space Program moved a launch pad to nearby Cape Canaveral. However, even today the town is mainly a residential area for commuters to Titusville and Melbourne. The economy continues to include tourism, but has branched into manufacturing and general construction supply.
Rockledge enjoys its location in Florida's "Space Coast". Nearby Titusville houses several space travel museums and Cape Canaveral is a short drive away. Year-round rocket and shuttle launches keep the atmosphere lively and children are sure to enjoy the bright lights of the rocket boosters (at a safe distance, of course). Rockledge not only benefits from the nation's technology, but the favorable climate and ocean setting provide unlimited recreational opportunities. Nearby parks of interest include Rockledge Park and Silver Pines Park, and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (located in Titusville) offers 150,000 acres of nature at its most fascinating.
Historical homes and buildings remind residents of the area's resort heritage. Mature trees line the streets of these areas, offering a wonderfully shaded venue from which to view the river. Brevard's Preservation Society continues to insure both the protection of the older architecture and the town's unique character.
Rockledge is located along US 1 and enjoys convenient access to Merritt Island, Cocoa, Titusville, and Melbourne. Orlando is just under an hour to the west and offers some of the country's most recognizable attractions, including Walt Disney World and Universal Studios.
