The High Museum is an Atlanta Landmark, designed by Richard Meier and listed by the American Institute of Architects as one of the “10 best works of American architecture of the 1990s.” The High houses permanent exhibits of European and American Paintings, African Art, folk art, decorative arts and a 64 foot mural.
Next door to the high is the Woodruff Arts Center, home to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Alliance Theatre and the Atlanta College of Art.
Many of Atlanta’s best theaters are within walking distance of Woodruff, including the 14th Street Playhouse, Center for Puppetry Arts, the New American Shakespeare Tavern, Agatha’s, Atlanta Civic Center and the Fox theatre. The 4,000 seat venue hosts performances by the Atlanta Ballet, who has earned the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating dance company in the country, the Atlanta Opera and road companies of Broadway productions.
The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University features the largest collection of ancient art in the Southeast, with over 18,000 objects spanning nearly 9,000 years. Many area colleges and universities house fine arts collections, host special exhibitions and provide venues for traveling musical and theatrical performers.
Attending sporting events in Atlanta is easy. Atlanta is the only city in the U.S. to have all of its major sports facilities centered downtown. The Braves, Falcons, Hawks and Thrashers play in three world-class facilities two miles apart. Atlanta has also hosted numerous major sporting events like the World Series, PGA Championship, Super Bowl, Final Four and the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
