Floyd County was established in 1832 and named in honor of John Floyd, military officer and member of the state and U.S. House of Representatives.
In 1834, two weary travelers stopped to rest beside a spring near the junction where the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers form the Coosa River. They and a third wayfarer decided the area was ideal for a town. Its abundance of water, heavy growth of timber, and its obviously fertile soil favorably impressed all three men. Today, Rome enjoys a very strategic location between the Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Birmingham metropolitan areas. Rome has consistently been recognized as one of the nation's best places in which to work and live. Affordable housing and the guarantee of a highly skilled workforce have attracted new businesses to this city. However, it is Rome's quality of life that overshadows everything else.
Rome is greatly blessed with the arts for a city of its size. A night on the town could include a performance by the Rome Symphony Orchestra, a visit to the Rome Little Theatre (to watch the "Nutcracker", among other great shows), and the Rome Area History Museum, which promotes cultural and historical awareness of the Rome area.
Recreational opportunities are also surprisingly abundant and consist of parks, golf courses, and river walks, among other activities. A few popular areas include Cedar Creek Park, a 28 acre park on Big Cedar Creek, and Rocky Mountain Recreation Area, one of the most vital electric generation projects in the history of Georgia that also provides picnic areas, a visitors center, overlooks, campgrounds, boat launches, a beach area, hiking trails, fishing, and powerhouse tours.
Rome is located in northwestern Georgia, just south of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The area is serviced by US 27 and US 411, and is just 66 miles northwest of Atlanta.
