(Sandy Springs enjoys its location just 10 minutes north of downtown Atlanta)
The population living in the Sandy Springs area has grown to around 80,000 in 2001, making it the seventh-largest community in the state of Georgia. However, as of this writing, Sandy Springs is pending incorporation. Located at the northern edge of the Atlanta metropolitan area, Sandy Springs enjoys a very strategic location for business growth, as major transportation routes and available commercial space are plentiful. Currently, more people work in Sandy Springs than live here. Sandy Springs comprises one of the fastest growing sectors in the Atlanta metro area and it is projected that by the year 2020 this area will be the regional population center.
Economy
The City of Sandy Springs is home to several Fortune 500 companies, including UPS, Mirant, Beazer Homes, and Newell Rubbermaid. Spectrum Brands, the Fortune 1000 company that manufactures Rayovac and Remington brand batteries and personal grooming products, is also based in the city. Due to its position as a large business base, the population of the city can swell to 125,000 during peak business hours, when several thousand workers commute into the city.
The city's largest business district is the Roswell Road corridor and the Perimeter Center (although Perimeter Mall itself resides in adjacent DeKalb County). Perimeter Center includes many high-rise buildings, including the 570-foot Concourse Towers (a.k.a. "the King and Queen towers"). Just south of this business district, across I-285, is a major medical center, anchored by Northside Hospital, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and Saint Joseph's Hospital.
Business is certainly good in Sandy Springs, and this is not likely to change anytime soon. Something else that is not likely to change is the quality of life in the city. Sandy Springs' diverse housing market offers a full spectrum of homes ranging from two bedroom starter homes through large river front mansions. Most of the residents here are college educated and a significant portion (20%) have advanced degrees. However, we do not see a "stuffy" affluent town here, but one that is a popular "playground" for area residents. Downtown Atlanta does offer all the amenities of your typical big city (the arts, great shopping and dining, sports, etc.), but not everyone enjoys the often-crowded attractions and traffic associated with a downtown visit. Sandy Springs has plenty of parks, shops and restaurants to keep its residents happy, and it is a tad more quiet than its "big brother to the south".
Sandy Springs is one of metro Atlanta's most affluent residential communities. The city, and the area surrounding the city, is experiencing rapid residential development. Particularly, the trend of luxury high-rise condominium development has expanded past Atlanta's Midtown, Buckhead, and Olympic Park neighborhoods and is now in Sandy Springs.
Sandy Springs combines the pace of modern development with peaceful, tree-lined streets and neighborhoods with their own unique character. This area may very well become Atlanta's second downtown, so get in while you can.
