Not too long ago, Ewa Beach was nothing but sugarcane fields. Now, however, it is the fastest growing area on the island of Oahu. Ewa Beach, sometimes known as Ewa Desert because of the dry, hot weather, is very different from the rest of the island. The sugarcane fields are gone, having been replaced with new houses. Each week new developments and projects begin. Ewa Beach is becoming a highly populated community filled with diverse cultures and opportunities. Many different kinds of people contribute to what Ewa Beach has become. The young families, the old, traditional families, and the military families; all have a different influence on the community.

First, the young families bring an excitement into an otherwise established area. Many young families are moving to Ewa because of the affordable housing. Families that thought they would never own their own home are establishing themselves in the Ewa community. Because of the many young children there was a need for an additional elementary school. Holomua Elementary is the forerunner in early education because of the pioneering of computers. Holomua has the most advanced special education department, Hawaiian Studies Center and a Computer Learning Center. From the beach, the military ships and submarines are often seen entering in the mouth of Pearl Harbor. In a quiet lagoon next to the beach is the largest natural breeding ground for Hammerhead sharks. The sharks can sometimes be seen swimming after dark.

All the diversities of people who live in Ewa Beach form a great big family that has only one thing in common; the spirit of Aloha
