(Snow-covered mountains dominate the scenery in Sun Valley)
The town of Sun Valley has become one of the best ski resort areas in the country. In fact, readers of Conde Naste' Traveler and Ski Magazine recently made it official by voting Sun Valley as THE best ski resort in the U.S. Ever since Sun Valley began operations in 1936 it has been a haven for not only ski lovers, but for those looking to escape their stressful lives. The man responsible for determining the site of Sun Valley, Count Felix Schoffgotsch, remarked, "This combines more delightful features than any place I have ever seen in Switzerland, Austria, or the U.S." Today, Sun Valley continues to provide a spirit of adventure to all who partake of its many offerings.
Bald Mountain, the area's mainstay, is not only popular for skiers, but also snowboarders. However, for those wishing not to "shred", there are plenty of groomed trails for cross-country excursions. The Sun Valley Ice Rink is a great place for those who do not fit the above categories, as many families utilize this facility for some relaxing ice skating.
Because Sun Valley is a four-season resort, the summer months provide some of the best golfing to be found in the country. The Sun Valley Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., was rated the number one course in Idaho by Golf Digest and is consistently among the top resort courses in the nation.
Sun Valley is located on Highway 75 near the town of Ketchum in south central Idaho. The closest large cities are Boise (90 miles west) and Idaho Falls (90 miles east). However, the lack of major transportation routes in the mountainous areas makes these cities very inaccessible. Then again, isn't that the point of a resort town? :)
