Burr Ridge is located approximately 19 miles from Chicago just off of Interstate 55 (the Stevenson Expressway). Known for it's distinctive upscale homes and quiet residential subdivisions, the village also includes a planned mix of five office parks and retail areas. The area which is now Burr Ridge was once the home of the Sioux, Pottawattamie, Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. In the early 1950s the area was sparsely settled, and large tracts of land were devoted to fanning. The gently rolling hills and wooded sections of the eastern portion of the area were, for the most part, divided into live acre tracts. In 1956, a one square mile area was incorporated as the village of Harvester and had once been a pig farm. In 1961, the territory around the old Route 66 was annexed to the village the following year and the name of the community was changed to Burr Ridge to denote the stand of burr oak trees on a ridge along County Line Road near Plainfield Road. The burr oak leaf became the village emblem. The country atmosphere still draws residents to Burr Ridge. Homes include townhomes, ranches, mansions and estates. Newer homes are renowned for their state-of-the-art luxury offerings in quiet rural settings. The Burr Ridge Park District now owns Harvester Park and other parks in the village and operates sports and recreation activities for the whole family. Some Burr Ridge families belong to Pleasant Dale Park District, known for staging summer concerts in the park. The village belongs to the Willowbrook-Burr Ridge Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a group famous for its summer festival, Cruisin' 66, a celebration of the highway that stretched from Chicago to Los Angeles. Elementary students are served by Gower Elementary District 62, Hinsdale Elemen- tary District 181, Community Consolidated District 180 and Pleasantdale Elementary District 107. High school students attend Hinsdale South High School in District 86 or Lyons Township High School in District 204. The village's proximity to Interstate 55 is an attraction, as the expressway stretches from Chicago to St. Louis. Commuters can also use a Pace Suburban Bus Service Park and Ride Facility at County Line Square to catch the train in Hinsdale.
