Population: 9,828 The Village of Lyons, 10 miles west of the Loop, is the oldest Chicago suburb, but the strong sense of community history does not mean Lyons is living in the past. The Des Plaines River and Salt Creek wind through town, and almost one quarter of the town's incorporated area is designated Cook County Forest Preserve. Plans are being made for a river walk through Lyons along Salt Creek to the Illinois and Michigan Canal. This project will be part of the Illinois and Michigan National Heritage Corridor.

Lyons has about 300 business, including everything from small shops to large corporate offices and manufacturing plants. Major employers include Walgreen's, Superior Bank, Material Services, Electro Motive, Reynolds Metals and Vulcan.

Community pride is a way of life in the area, and civic groups include the Kiwanis, the American Legion and Auxiliary and the Lyons Lions. The village has a recreation department that offers a variety of classes for adults, seniors, teens, clown class, ski lessons and hunter education Lyons is part of a four community cooperative program to provide better recreational opportunities.

One of the things Lyons' residents like most about our town is its proximity to everything. It is close to expressways and trains, the zoo is nearby and it is convenient to many shopping centers in the area.
