Oak Brook is located in Cook and DuPage County

Population: 9,178 Oak Brook is located 18 miles from Chicago and is known for its upscale homes and thriving corporate scene. In the 1830s Frederick Graue built Graue Mill along Salt Creek. His family ran the mill for the next 60 years. The mill was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and it is one of three authenticated underground railway stations in Illinois where runaway slaves found a haven. Graue Mill is now a museum and hosts special events such as a pioneer encampment, old fashioned craft demonstrations and concerts. The adjacent Fullersburg Woods forest preserve offers hiking along Salt Creek. But the Oak Brook of today was the vision of developer Paul Butler, who in the 1960s envisioned a community of high-quality homes and businesses. A nature area and a school bears his name today. Perhaps the village's most distinct feature is its homes tucked away into leafy subdivisions. Mansions, estates and townhomes on tree-lined streets draw corporate executives and others who want to live in low-profile luxury to the village. The village is home to world headquarters of major corporations such as McDonalds and Ace Hardware. Oakbrook Center attracts shoppers from all around the area to its distinctive stores, including Sears, Nordstrom, Lord and Taylor, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue.

In June of 1977, Oak Brook residents voted purchase the 270-acre area known as the Oak Brook Sports Core, which is now owned and operated by the village. Applications for use and payment of user fees are required for the Bath and Tennis Club membership, golf club season membership and field use. The Bath and Tennis Club has twelve outdoor tennis courts and an indoor tennis dome, which is open from September to May, and three outdoor swimming pools. The Oak Brook Golf Club has an 18-hole golf course and practice facilities including an all-grass tee driving range. The Oak Brook Park District operates a Family Recreation Center and a Racquet Club and offers programming for the entire family. Matches are scheduled on the polo grounds on Sundays from June to September, and many times the matches attract dignitaries from around the world. Oak Brook is also home to the Mayslake Forest Preserve and the Peabody Mansion. Purchased by DuPage County residents in the 1990s, the mansion and a former friary, which also sits on the property will be developed for public use and for senior housing. The First Folio Shakespeare Festival holds summer performances on the lawn of the mansion. The village is served by three elementary districts - Salt Creek Elementary District 48, Butler Elementary District 53 and Downers Grove Elementary District 58. Hinsdale High School District 86, Willowbrook High School District 88 and Downers Grove Community High School District 99 serve high school students. Students may also attend Elmhurst Unit School District 205.

Oak Brook is located off of Interstate 88 and 290 (the Eisenhower Expressway) and near Interstate 294 (the Tri-State Tollway), which offers access to Interstate 55 (the Stevenson Expressway). The village is also served by the Pace Suburban Bus System, which runs a route from Oakbrook Center.
