(Seventy-four feet taller than the United States Capitol, the Illinois State Capitol towers high on the landscape of Springfield)
Springfield is an historical wonderland, rich with an abundance of museums and sites that showcase this town's very unique heritage. Oh, did we mention former President Abraham Lincoln was born here? A simple walk down Main Street is akin to a history lesson, though this one is much more lively than your old high school teacher's monotone lectures. Tour the Old State Capitol, where the debates in the Hall of Representatives preceding the Civil War are almost audible. Other enriching sites include the Illinois State Museum, which is filled to the brim with cultural and historical artifacts from the state's earliest days. Also, be sure to check out the Oliver P. Parks Telephone Museum and learn about the progression of this very American invention.
History buffs may also partake of the unique heritage of the "Mother Road", better known to everyone as Route 66. This most highly esteemed of all transportation routes makes a course straight through the heart of Springfield. Every year in early autumn visitors can attend the International Route 66 Mother Road Festival. This premiere annual event is attended by thousands of people from around the world and features hundreds of classic vehicles, live entertainment and celebrities, dozens of food booths, one-of-a kind exhibits, the world’s largest sock hop, and more. If you are a fan of "fun", you will find much of it here.
Life in Springfield is quiet, yet never without a dull moment. The educational system in the city is very strong, and is supported by the University of Illinois at Springfield. The university has several mentoring programs with some of the 12 nationally known insurance companies and more than 165 state, regional, and national associations who have their headquarters based here. Needless to say, the economy in Springfield is strong, and this strength comes from its diversity.
Springfield is located near the geographic center of the state and is serviced by I-55 and I-72. The city is located about one hour southwest of Bloomington and 90 minutes south of Peoria.
