(Life in Gary keeps getting better all the time)
Founded in the early 1900's by an attorney of US Steel, Gary was appropriately built around the steel industry. However, as the industry faltered a bit in the 1970's so did quality of life in Gary. A wounded economy led to the exodus of much of Gary's population in exchange for folks seeking very cheap housing. The end result was a city with high unemployment and a high crime rate.
Over the past decade efforts have been underway to improve the quality of life in Gary, which required a boost in the local economy. Gary has always had a wonderful resource in its 15 miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan. In addition, Gary is located near the intersection of three major interstates and is only 20 minutes from downtown Chicago. The current city and state governments are finding ways to use these resources to brighten Gary's future. In fact, Indiana's Governor recently named Gary one of several Millennium Communities. This initiative seeks to engage Hoosier communities in celebrating past, present, and future.
Change in Gary has been quick and residents are working hard with their government to implement positive changes all around the city. As a measure of their success, the 2001 Miss USA beauty pageant was held in Gary and will be held here for the next few years. Other projects currently underway in Gary include the construction of a baseball stadium for its new minor league team, the Genesis Convention Center, which hosted the beauty pageant, and the Media Center, a building which will house high-tech companies and local television stations.
Gary is entering the new millennium with a vision of the future that is brighter than ever before. Come and share the excitement!
