"Vale of Paradise"

Originally located in Indian Territory, the present site of Valparaiso was included in the land purchased by the U.S. Government from the Potawatomi Indians in 1832. An interesting side note to this land is the fact that present-day Valparaiso sits on a glacial moraine (known as the Valparaiso Moraine) and the old Sauk Indian Trail that runs from the Chicago area to Detroit.

Valparaiso is conveniently located near several major transportation routes, including I-94, I-90, I-65 and US 30. Combined with a wonderful business climate this area looks to increase its commercial development, though recent additions along Hwy 2 on the eastern edge of town have turned once quiet roads into a buzz of commercial activity. Nonetheless, development is a sign of economic health and is inevitable in Valparaiso, as the town is located in one of the richest counties in the state (Porter).

Valparaiso is a great place to raise a family, with its highly regarded school system, low crime rate, and several area parks providing recreational opportunities. The centerpiece of Valparaiso has to be Valparaiso University, offering 3500 students a top-notch curriculum that is nationally recognized in such publications as U.S. News & World Report. A recent trip to college basketball's NCAA Tournament and a Sweet Sixteen appearance has greatly strengthened the spirit of residents whose pride has always been strong.

Valparaiso has many claims of fame, but perhaps the most celebrated is former resident Orville Redenbacher, who is honored anually in a Popcorn Festival which takes place every fall and brings the community together with lots of fun and, of course, lots of popcorn.

Valparaiso is indeed Indiana's "Vale of Paradise". No, there aren't any natural wonders nearby to amaze the senses, but a friendliness and safety unsurpassed by towns of the same size will immediately make you feel that you are home.
