Vincennes is a city filled with history. It has several historic buildings and parks, including the George Rogers Clark National Historic Park. This park displays a memorial to the conquest of the Old Northwest Territory. An old cathedral complex, Basilica of St. Francis Xavier and French & Indian Cemetery is a few blocks away. The cathedral, built in 1826 is the third of three churches to be built here. The first, a log church, was built in 1749, and marks the place where the first Catholic Parish was formed in Indiana. Across town lies Fort Knox II. This fort was built to protect settlers and to control the Wabash River.

The story of Vincennes is a vibrant, moving story of people. To tell our story, we must introduce you to the men and women who came to the banks of the Wabash, left their footprints, changed the landscape and wrote a short paragraph in the annals of history.

First came the ancestors of the Indians, some 12,000 years ago. These wandering bands hunted big game animals such as the mastodon, mammoth, bison, and bear. The hunters' flint projectile points still can be found in the fields around Vincennes. Next came the mound building Indians, about a thousand years ago. The two large mounds south of town, Son of Tabae and Pyramid mounds, attest to their activities.

The Piankashaw and the Shawnee called this home. They hunted buffalo; raised corn and tobacco; reared their families; fought the French, British and Americans; lost their homes and were moved to Oklahoma. Their arrowheads and some tools are all that remain. The French trappers came early and stayed long. The built their cabins, cleared some land, married Indian girls, reared their families and many stayed. The missionaries came, they witnessed, taught, and established congregations. Names like Gibault, Rivet, Brute and others are familiar in local history as are names which have a romantic sound; Busseron, Vigo, Dubois, Richardville, Godare, and of course, Francois-Marie Bissor, Sieur de Vincennes.

Vincennes was commissioned to construct a fort on the Wabash River to counteract the expansion of the British. He completed a fort here in 1732. Four years later while on a campaign against the Chickasaw Indians in Mississippi, he was captured and burned at the stake. The fort was named Poste de Vincennes, in honor of Sieur de Vincennes and his bravery.

After the 1763 British victory in the French and Indian War, the flag of France was to fly no more on the banks of the Wabash. In its place the British flag floated in the breeze over the fort at Vincennes.
