We have the cleanest, nicest downtown with a beautiful city square where there are city band concerts and in the winter there is ice skating. The square is also the focal point for many local festivals.
Our park system is second to none. In our parks there are picnic areas, a fishing lake, lighted softball and baseball diamonds, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, the best skate board park in Western and Central Kansas and our renowned local zoo.
Great Bend is located next to two of the world's most important bodies of water; Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. Hundreds of thousands of geese, ducks, shore birds, eagles, etc. stop in Great Bend during their annual migration. We are truly a bird watcher's paradise. Also, with our large number of pheasants and quail, we are a sportsman's delight.
We also have one of the most diverse economic bases you will find. We have oil and agricultural related industries. We have manufacturers for large equipment; we make bullets and arrows. We have a large pension plan employer. We have high tech. We have low tech. We have high speed internet capabilities.
Every year visitors from all over the Midwest hit the trail to Great Bend. Our holiday light displays are among the best in the nation. In fact, the trail is a recipient of the American Bus Association's Top 100 Events in North America for the year 2000. The Trail wanders through a vibrant community that takes the holidays seriously.
