Hays is located in Ellis County

Population: 27,600 Welcome to the All America City! Located in the heart of Kansas of I-70, 95 miles west of Salina, the community of Hays presents the rare mix of big city amenities in the wholesome setting of a small town. This peaceful environment is perfect for a comfortable family life, while providing many commercial and economic opportunities. Hays has grown from its rugged beginnings in the pioneer days of the 1860s to a thriving, modern hub of Western Kansas. Hays is a major center for retail trade, medical services, financial services, education, and recreation. The city's healthy economy is led by education, agriculture, manufacturing, oil, and tourism. Fort Hays State University, the only four-year college in Western Kansas, has about 6,400 students. Hays was recently named one of the top ten cities with the shortest average trip to work nationwide (Wall Street Journal, March 9, 2001).

Hays citizens enjoy a bounty of recreational, athletic, performing arts, art, and historical facilities and activities. Since the day Hays sprang to life in the fall of 1867, early settlers like “Buffalo Bill” Cody, “Calamity” Jane and George Custer found plenty of entertainment. One dime novel reported Hays was famous for being “open 24 hours a day”. And even though “Will Bill” Hickok is no longer the local law enforcement and bars, saloons and brothel aren’t the only business lining our brick streets there is still plenty to see and do in Hays. Just a sampling includes public golf courses, tennis courts, community parks complete with ballfields, picnic areas, and large open spaces, a new Aquatic Park, country clubs, and 8 theatres. There's even more fun when you toss in Lake Wilson recreation which includes more swimming, water skiing, camping, fishing, and boating.

Building on an already good quality of life, the city's new comprehensive strategic plan coupled with a city council sporting experience, pride in heritage, and a genuine caring for the community and its residents, will continue to add many enhancements to the community, making sure the future is both bright and promising.
