(The Overlook Restaurant at Rolling Hills Refuge Wildlife Conservation Center)
Salina is the county seat of Saline County and is situated near the center of Kansas. It is equidistant from Topeka and Wichita, both cities being about 100 miles from Salina.
While Salina may appear to be another typical Kansas town cut off from civilization, this community of about 50,000 will surprise you with what it can offer to both visitors and residents. For instance there is the Historic Fox Theatre, currently undergoing restoration, which will soon be home to performing arts in the area. If you seek more history, visit Historic Downtown Salina. This area showcases Victorian homes and Art Deco designs in the business district. In addition, a 2-day festival, known as the Santa Fe Days, celebrates the rich heritage of Salina every year.
While history and the arts comprise a big part of Salina's identity, there are other attractions in the area worth seeing. Perhaps the most fascinating is the Rolling Hills Refuge Wildlife Conservation Center, which features many endangered and exotic animal species. Also of interest is the Smoky Hill Vineyards & Winery, located just 1.5 miles north of Salina. This area, which was once the site of riding stables, is now the producer of many of Kansas' finest table wines.
