(The International Bar-B-Q Festival draws spectators from all over the country)
The Owensboro-Daviess County area is recognized as one of America's best places to live. Several factors contribute to this distinction, including low crime rate, strong economy and a host of cultural and entertaining festivals held throughout the year. In fact, Owensboro is known affectionately as "a city of festivals". The world-famous International Bar-B-Q Festival and the Summer Festival attract visitors from every corner of the country.
As the third-largest city in the state of Kentucky, Owensboro is important as a hub of industry in the western part of the state. Its location along the banks of the Ohio River not only fortifies the economy, but also provides a scenic setting where tourism is quite popular. Future plans for the area include a new four-land bridge connecting Owensboro to southern Indiana and, more importantly, I-64, which runs between St. Louis and Louisville.
Education is a very important issue in Owensboro. Two public school systems and several private and parochial schools provide excellent education for students. The Daviess County Public School is currently in the midst of an initiative known as the Graduation 2010 program, which has received attention from NBC's "Today Show". Former President Bill Clinton commented favorable on the program during his educational tour in 2000. The Graduation 2010 program seeks more financial investments for education, but also higher demands on students to reverse the nation's downward trend in scholastic performance. Owensboro also has provisions for higher learning, including Brescia University, Kentucky Wesleyan College, and Western Kentucky University - Owensboro Center. Technical centers and a junior college are also provided for students looking to follow specific career paths.
Several area parks and pools, along with golf courses, activity centers and Kentucky Motor Speedway Auto Racing, provide recreational activities. Sightseeing opportunities are also plentiful, owing to Owensboro's rich history. The Owensboro Area Museum of Science & History is a must see, as is the Hall of Fame.
Several US Routes and two toll roads service Owensboro. Evansville, IN is about 30 miles to the west and Louisville is 106 miles to the east.
