Legend has it that the pirate Jean Lafitte discovered this safe harbor for hiding treasures. Some believe his spirit still hovers over the dark waters of Calcasieu Parish guarding his vast buried treasures.

In 1852, the city of Lake Charles became the seat of Calcasieu Parish. Located in Southwest Louisiana, Calcasieu Parish is situated approximately 150 miles east of Houston, TX and 225 miles west of New Orleans.

The area’s climate is generally humid and subtropical. Due to its close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, Calcasieu Parish enjoys mild temperatures.

The population of Lake Charles is approximately 75,800, with over 171,000 in the greater Calcasieu area.

Calcasieu Parish hosts a variety of cultural and family entertainment. These include museums, a symphony, ballet societies, theater companies, and numerous festivals and State parks.
