The town of Bar Harbor sits on Mt. Desert Island, which is also home to three other towns and the Acadia National Forest. Like many other towns in the Downeast Maine region, Bar Harbor was founded on the shipbuilding industry and had early economic success because of its location on Frenchman Bay and its quick access to the Atlantic Ocean. Today, Bar Harbor is a popular tourist destination as visitors can explore the jagged coastline and numerous islands in the area.
The Acadia National Park is certainly Bar Harbor's most important asset. As the second most visited National Park in the United States, Acadia has 120 miles of marked trails and 17 mountains to climb. The Carriage Road consists of over 50 miles of broken stone roads built by John Rockefeller, Jr., which he later donated to the park. There are also 20 lakes and rivers within the park.
Bar Harbor is very accessible to the mainland via a bridge on Highway 3. Other islands in this region are well connected to one another, making their exploration quite convenient. Bar Harbor is located on the east side of Mt. Desert Island and is just 15 miles from Ellsworth.
