The Chesapeake Bay, the largest inland body of water on the East Coast, forms the county's eastern boundary. Pleasure boaters, swimmers and waterfowl hunters take advantage of this natural resource.
Seven marinas dot the county's shoreline, where captains can dock their boats after a day's voyage on the Bay, the Susquehanna or Gunpowder rivers.
If you'd rather hike than sail, then visit one of Harford's three state parks. They offer scenic beauty and a step back into Harford's rich and colorful history.
The largest is the 2,500-acre Susquehanna State Park on the banks of the Susquehanna River outside Havre de Grace. The main attractions are the Carter Mansion, Rock Run Mill and the Jersey Toll House.
Rock Run Mill was recently restored, where visitors can see corn ground into meal at the mill. Nearby is Steppingstone Museum, a turn-of-the-century rural farm museum.
Besides these attractions, there are a self-guided nature trail, bird sanctuary, picnic and camp sites, bicycle paths and one of the best fishing grounds on the East Coast.
Across county lies Rocks State Park, north of Bel Air. The park covers over 600 acres of impressive natural beauty characterized by massive rocks and boulders flanking the banks of Deer Creek.
While in the Rocks, stop to see the King and Queen Seats, a throne-like rock formation, where, according to legend, many important Indian chieftains sat in tribal council.
Down the road is Gunpowder State Park on the Harford-Baltimore County line. More than 11,000 acres along the Gunpowder River valley make up this park. It's a favorite family spot with hiking, horse trails and picnicking facilities.
If tennis, basketball, fishing or baseball is more your game, then Harford has the park, court, pier or field for you.
No one goes wanting for exercise here with 53 playgrounds, 96 tennis courts, 79 multi-use courts, 144 baseball/softball diamonds, 17 parks with pavilions, 16 fishing piers, 21 picnic areas, 8 locations with hiking trails and the Harford County Equestrian Center.
As for professional sporting events, look no further than nearby Baltimore City. Cheer on the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards and the Super Bowl Champion, Baltimore Ravens!
