(Annapolis retains much of its great colonial heritage)
Currently the capital of Maryland, Annapolis celebrated its 350th birthday in 1999, making it one of the oldest settlements in the country. Local residents and city officials are very proud of Annapolis' heritage and are dedicated to preserving artifacts, which reflect it. At the same time, the city is aggressively approaching the future. Extensive (and growing) business opportunities and a highly educated and available workforce have attracted businesses of all sizes. The City's Office of Economic Development oversees the retention and success rates of local businesses and seeks to improve both.
As mentioned above, Annapolis has enormous historical value. The country's first presidents (Washington and Jefferson) walked along the same brick sidewalks that countless tourists and residents use every day. Even more intriguing is the fact that these bricks were laid in the days when Annapolis was the capital of the country! If our Founding Fathers were to gaze upon the city today they would see that not much has changed. Annapolis boasts of some of the finest 17th and 18th century architecture to be found anywhere in the country - including the residences of all four Maryland signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Annapolis is home to the United States Naval Academy, which opened in 1845, and later became home to St. John's College, the third-oldest institution of higher learning in the country. Annapolis has always been a community on the move. Visitors walking along the city's famous waterfront can imagine what life was like in the 1700's when the Chesapeake Bay was a major trade route for goods being shipped all over the world. Today, sailboat races in the harbor have given Annapolis the moniker of "America's Sailing Capital".
Annapolis is a full-service community with a wealth of bigger city amenities, but without the heavy traffic and noise. An excellent local school system and several parks and recreation opportunities, Annapolis is great for developing a future workforce that is both intelligent and well rounded. Numerous community events throughout the year help to enrich the living experience in Annapolis by bringing citizens together and providing an eclectic mix of interesting and entertaining spectacles.
Annapolis is located along the Chesapeake Bay and is situated just 20 miles from both Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. The area is serviced by several major transportation routes that facilitate travel to nearby towns and resources.
