Originally an agricultural town, the last two decades have seen much of the farmland around Damascus converted to housing, as federal agencies and private corporations opened offices in Montgomery County and drew newcomers to the area. The countryside around Damascus still remains predominantly rural, however, and Damascus (which now has a population of approximately 8,000) still remains a commercial center for the rural communities of Clagettsville, Browningsville, Cedar Grove, Woodfield, King's Valley, Purdum and Lewisdale.
Beginning on August 3, 1988, a multi-million dollar construction began on Main Street to renovate both the buildings in the area and to install sidewalks, trees, driveway aprons, trash cans, parking and other improvements. The project was halted to change the final design and was not continued until after 1990, when the population of the Damascus area reached over 14,000 people. Many improvements were made when the project finally resumed.
Damascus is a beautiful community located in the suburbs of Maryland. Damascus offers the feel of country living without sacrificing the amenities of modern life. One can pick strawberries in the Spring at Butler's Orchard or hike on the Magruder Trail all year round. Children in Damascus are kept very busy with activities ranging from football to lacrosse, soccer and wrestling. The Damascus Sports Association is a very well-run all volunteer sports organization that keeps these programs going and welcomes all who want to help. Damascus Soccer Club plays their games locally and also at the Germantown Soccerplex, located just 10 minutes away. This state of the art complex offers indoor and outdoor fields--the outdoor fields are absolutely pristine!
