(Congressional Plaza)
Rockville is the seat of Montgomery County and is Maryland's second largest city. In addition, it is one of the state's oldest towns, dating back to colonial times. Incorporated in 1860, Rockville experienced slow growth until 1873 when the metropolitan branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad came to Rockville. Fifteen years later, the first mayor and council were elected, replacing the three commissioners who had been governing the town. Early commerce was based on agriculture. Today, the once-quiet county seat has prospered into a cosmopolitan city with close ties to the federal government, Rockville's largest employer. In addition, Rockville is proud to be the home of both research offices of and headquarters for national corporations as well as the county government.
Rockville has done a great job preserving its over 200+ years of history. Numerous sites in town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the entire West Montgomery Avenue historic district, the B & O Railroad Station, and Old St. Mary's Church and cemetery. While there is a predominance of Victorian era architecture in Rockville, buildings and homes from the late 18th century and early 19th century may also be found. The Montgomery County Historical Society and Peerless Rockville are dedicated to keeping a historical perspective in a fast-moving world that applauds modern development.
Residents of Rockville enjoy the city's wealth of employment opportunities. In fact, Rockville's employment base is currently greater than the population. Because of increasing housing demands, a variety of accommodations are available, from high-rise condominiums to Victorian homes, from contemporary models to the more traditional. Strong local schools add to the attraction of Rockville as both a place to work and a place to call home.
Entertainment and recreation in Rockville are quite abundant. Fans of the arts will enjoy the Rockville Musical Theatre, the Baltimore Opera Company, and the Glenview Mansion Art Gallery. Sports fans and outdoor types will find enjoyment in the Rockville Sports Plex and several of D.C.'s professional sporting events (Redskins, Capitals, and Wizards).
Rockville is located just 10 miles from Washington, D.C., and about 45 minutes from Baltimore. The city is serviced by several transportation routes and is 5 miles from the Potomac River.
