Bedford is located in Middlesex County
Population: 12,996 This historic community on the outskirts of Boston is in the heart of the Northeast's high tech, tourism, and commercial markets. Bedford is only a 30-minute drive to Boston, the capital of Massachusetts; and minutes away from rural towns and shore points or beaches. Within a five-minute drive of the town hall are headquarters of several prestigious corporations, one of the Air Force's leading research facilities, a civil air terminal, the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, high-tech manufacturing, research and development organizations, and a rich tapestry of industry, commerce, tradespeople, and professionals .
The legacy of the Bedford Flag, the Job Lane House, and the early days of the Revolution are deeply imbedded in this community; yet Bedford contains a modern mix of retail stores, fine restaurants, real estate, and an aggressive conservation policy. Despite many changes, Bedford has retained the flavor of a small rural town. Whether you look to Bedford as a place to live, work, shop, or play, you will find it a town where quality of life is paramount.
Bedford is located just off Route 95 (Massachusetts state route 128), about 18 miles west of Boston. Typically, travelers arrive by car; however, commuter rail is available in nearby Concord, and a commuter bus is used extensively during rush hour. A minivan is available on a limited basis for local transportation.
On the south part of town, bordering Lexington, lies Hanscom Air Force Base, a research base with limited military craft activity; however, the state's Massachusetts Port Authority operates an active civil air terminal for private and industrial craft. The Minuteman Bikeway, originating in Bedford and continuing through Lexington and Arlington to Cambridge, offers a new challenge to transportation. It was created on the bed of former railroad tracks to Boston.
Bedford's education system is recognized statewide and nationally for its progressive, broad curriculum. Neighborhood elementary schools feed into a central middle and high school complex. Nearby, Middlesex Community College, part of the state's public education system, offers undergraduate associate degrees. Bedford is also a member of the regional Shawsheen Vocational School district.
