Population: 2,910 Incorporated in 1733, Sheffield is the oldest town in the Berkshires. Settlers were originally attracted by the Housatonic River floodplain. Much of Sheffield remains open and in agricultural production. Among the earliest settlers was Colonel John Ashley, a prosperous merchant whose house in Ashley Falls has been resotred and is open to the public. The last battle of Shays' Rebellion in 1787 took place in Sheffield. At the time, Sheffield was one of the three largest towns in the Berkshires.
