Population: 3,100 Chartered in 1737, Stockbridge is one of the oldest towns in the Berkshires. Since its earliest days, Stockbridge has proven to be a remarkably fertile town in terms of the notoriety of its residents, including 18th century religious thinker Jonathon Edwards, sculptor Danial Chester French, diplomat Joseph Choate, illustrator Norman Rockwell (who helped contribute to Stockbridge's fame with his paintings of Main Streey) and the Sedgwick family. In the late 19th century Stockbridge was a popular summer destination for the rich and famous of the Gilded Age. Today the town boasts a rich cultural tradition that includes four museums (Norman Rockwell Museum, Naumkaeg, Chesterwood and the Mission House), the Berkshire Botanical Garden, and the Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
