Chelsea is strategically located halfway between Ann Arbor (home of the University of Michigan) and Jackson just minutes north of I-94. Visitors to Chelsea will immediately notice the intricate old-time architecture of its quaint and historic downtown. Even more impressive, there is no chipping paint to be found and very few, if any, of the buildings are in poor shape. Simply put, this town will remind you of the ceramic collectibles in the Snow Village or Charles Dickens Village series. During Christmas, festive lighting and side streets lined with large, snow-covered trees will put anyone in the Christmas spirit.
Chelsea's economy is quite diverse for a town of its size, including book crafting and food processing, in addition to being a major automotive proving ground. Close proximity to I-94 and the resources of Ann Arbor add greatly to the living experience for residents of Chelsea.
The community is host to a variety of activities throughout the year. In early spring, the Knights of Columbus sponsor a Lenten Fish Fry, and during the summer months art festivals and golf outings are the main activities. As Christmas nears there is a Festival of Lights and a Victorian Farm Christmas.
Home of Jiffy Mixes and movie actor Jeff Daniels, Chelsea is Washtenaw County's best kept secret. Residents come to Chelsea for it's quaint historic charm. The styles of homes vary from farmhouse style to family sized, custom built, to upscale suburban. Chelsea has generally been a prosperous town and the quality of its housing has served it well.
Set just 20 minutes west of Ann Arbor and 15 minutes east of Jackson, Chelsea is bustling with small town activities. The Common Grill restaurant, The Purple Rose Theatre and Chelsea's Center for the Development of The Arts are some of the local attractions. The Chelsea Community Fair is the third week in August every year and is kicked off with a parade with floats and the schools marching bands. The surrounding area offers many lakes for fishing, boating and swimming, as well as several top-notch golf courses and recreation areas for hiking, biking, skiing and canoeing.
