Like so many others in Michigan, Clio began as a lumbering town. It started in 1837 when Theodore P. Dean built a sawmill here. The Pere Marquette Railroad in 1861 built the Varna Station here (so named because it was on the Varna family farm). It was renamed Clio by the first postmaster, David Huyck in 1866. It was incorporated as a village in 1873 and later as a city in 1928.
The Clio area, made up of Clio and Thetford and Vienna Townships is known for its bike path that runs through the Clio City Park.
Clio has a growing reputation as an arts coummunity with the Clio Area Amphitheater, an art center and the city park.
Clio is located South of Birch Run and Frankenmuth, North-East of Flushing, East of Montrose and West of Millington and Otisville.
