"We're Making it Happen!"

As the capital of Michigan, Lansing enjoys its strategic location between several important centers of industry in the state, including Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Detroit. While Lansing has much potential with regards to commercial development, the economy draws heavily on the automotive industry. One of the largest employers in Lansing is General Motors Corporation, which manufactures various Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Pontiac models at the Lansing plant. This area's automotive history is quite expansive, dating back to the late 1800's when Ransom E. Olds, along with a few investors, started Oldsmobile. Since that time, Lansing has gained recognition as one of the most productive automotive plants, leading the nation in production in the mid-1990's.

State Capitol Building

Even if you are not a car buff, you will find plenty of reasons to visit Lansing. The beautiful capitol building is an architectural wonder on the outside and inside, and contains many fascinating bits of the city's history. More history may be found at several area museums, including the Michigan Library and Historical Center, the Michigan Women’s Historical Center & Hall of Fame and the R E Olds Transportation Museum.

After a day of digesting the history of the area, take the kids to the Impression 5 Science Center, which presents science in several thousand square feet of interactive exhibits and special classes for kids. For outside enjoyment, visit the 100-acre Potter Park Zoo, which showcases over 400 animals from all over the world. You are likely to be tuckered out by these interesting attractions, so enjoy your evening by taking in the Lansing Symphony Orchestra at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts. Located on the campus of Michigan State University, the Wharton Center is home not only to musical performances and operas, but plays and kids shows are often on the schedule.

Sports fanatics will have no trouble keeping themselves entertained. During baseball season, the minor league Lansing Lugnuts keep the crowd entertained with great baseball and two adorable mascots, Big Lug and Ratchet. The Lugnuts play in the aptly named Oldsmobile Park, a wonderful facility built in the mid-1990's. If you are not a baseball fan, then travel east down Michigan Avenue for about 10 minutes and you will find yourself in the middle of the Michigan State University campus. Great basketball and football programs, along with several other strong sports programs, insure you will find something you like.

As the city's slogan says, Lansing is "making it happen" through a strong economic development plan that involves the needs and desires of current residents. Visitors to the area will find friendly people who care about their town.
